Public Iissue Engagement

Public Iissue Engagement

Taiwanese youths (and juveniles) have a cold and distant attitude toward social political participation. In addition, the hierarchical education system, and in particular the lack of opportunities for engagement in public issues, create passive learning habits. Therefore, ‘helping youth actively participate in public issues' is an important policy direction of the Taiwanese government, as stated in the Executive Yuan's ‘Youth Policy Promotion Program' in 2003 and ‘Youth Policy White Paper' in 2005. In line with these policy leads, the ‘ Youth Public Participation Academy ' was established by NYC on March 29, 2005 as a promotional organization. The Academy is inspired by the open school concept, to create a platform where young people can ‘analyze, converse, and act', and where youth can develop through empowerment, action, acknowledgement, networking and other organized plans and projects. We hope to mobilize more young people to take part in public issues, and use this as a starting point to focus youth power.
