The textile and clothing industry is very complex. What advantages do the undergraduate students hold to stand out in the industry? What should they improve? The Department of Textiles and Clothing of Fu Jen University executed the "Professional Career Cultivation Project for Textile and Garments", providing a series of lectures and activities subsidized by the Youth Development Administration under the Ministry of Education in 2019. In addition to in-class learning, the program allowed students to have a better understanding of every aspect of the industry by providing them with opportunities for field trips and lectures by professionals working along the entire manufacturing process. And at the same time, professional lecturers, outstanding alumni, and the leading voices of the industry were invited to assist the students to envision their career path. The students benefited from the professional views and gained a better knowledge of industry trends, brand management, individual development, and personal life exploration.
Some may think that the textile is only arts and crafts, but they would be surely mistaken. However, you would not be able to greatly widen your horizon on how to expand your concept to prototype until you have paid a visit to the manufacturing factories. Lin, a freshman in the Department of Textiles and Clothing, was particularly impressed during her visit to a knitting factory. "I have acquired the professional knowledge of transforming an idea into an actual product, and it also led me to re-consider my original intention of studying textile and clothing. In addition to improving the taste of beauty and design inspirations, I also have to comprehend the social needs and marketing for higher added value and competitive advantage." Lin said.
The knitting course at Fu Jen University arranged visits to many distinctive knitting manufacturers for students, helping students connect with leading companies, government agencies, suppliers, and distributers. The program helped prepare students for transitioning into the industry by ensuring an understanding of all the necessary steps of design and manufacturing.
